Every year, more and more workers are transitioning from traditional office jobs to telecommuting jobs. It’s a global trend that is drastically changing the way people work. For many, it’s a dream – working from home allows greater flexibility and freedom, as well as more time to spend with family. And let’s face it: who wouldn’t want to be able to earn money without having to change out of their pajamas?
But working from home has its challenges too. Finding a quiet place to work, staying productive, and keeping in contact with your co-workers and clients are all key elements to a successful telecommuting career.
Lucky for you, we’ve put together a toolkit with everything you need for your home office. Whether you’re a longtime telecommuter, or just starting out, these tools will make your telecommuting career a success.
Audio Conference Software
Communication is critical in any telecommuting job. Because you’re no longer sharing an office with your coworkers and supervisors, no one actually knows that you’re working unless you let them know. Whether you’re working as part of a team or holding meetings with individual clients, you’ll need to be able to share ideas and get answers with minimal interruptions. Skype is one of our favorite free applications that allows you to make voice or video calls, send instant messages or set up chat rooms for your group projects. A more advanced application, WebEx, combines HD video conferencing, screen sharing, and document collaboration.
Noise Cancelling Headphones
One of the most overlooked benefits of working from an office is having a quiet space for phone calls to coworkers or clients. If you’re working on the go, or in a noisy space, a good pair of noise cancelling headphones can cut through all the chatter and leave you free to focus on your client. Our ClearMic Noise Cancelling Mic uses noise-cancelling technology to filter out ambient sounds, so no matter where you are, it will sound like you’re in a quiet office.
There are many tools out there that allow you to collaboratively create and edit documents, spreadsheets, code, and presentations. Among the most popular is Google Docs, a free suite of collaborative office applications offered by Google. For a more secure option with greater functionality, try PB Works. PB works is an online collaboration platform that allows you to store, share, and edit documents with your teammates. They offer specialized products for marketing firms, legal agencies, and classrooms. Their wiki builder is a great resource for building and sharing documents with your whole company.
Remote Desktop Tools
Whether you want to manage your own computer away from home or if you’re troubleshooting a problem for a client, remote desktop programs can save you a lot of time and headaches. Remote desktop software can also come in handy if you need help from your own company’s IT department. Instead of trying to follow complicated instructions over the phone, your IT liaison can log in and fix your problem remotely.
Chrome Remote Desktop is an app that allows you to securely connect to another computer remotely through the Chrome browser. Connections can be configured for short or long-term, and works cross-platform, so you can easily connect to Windows, Linux, or Mac computers.
